The Eday Heritage & Visitor Centre is Eday’s most recent community-owned and run enterprise project
It took 9 years, of hard work by Eday Heritage Centre Association, to reach fruition but it did and the centre opened in
July 2008
Our current exhibition – “Sea Stories” - was developed by Sybil Tchaikovsy (Eday Partnership’s Eday Oral History Project Co-ordinator) and is an excellent overview of Eday & the sea over the past 200 years. The exhibition would not have been possible without the generosity of the people that lent and gave memories and materials.
The Centre is also home to a display by Eday’s ranger service and the European Marine Energy Centre rents an interpretation area dedicated to their work on tidal energy devices in the
Since the centre opened it has been used for courses, meetings, exhibitions & social occasions & provides a small but atmospheric venue for a variety of events.
There is a “help yourself” tea & coffee bar where we ask for a donation in exchange & the 6kW Eoltec wind turbine has, to date, offset the energy costs of the building.
Eday Heritage Centre Association has, until now, been an un-articled association with charitable status but we are currently in the process of becoming a Company Limited by Guarantee with Charitable Status.
Future plans include the improvement/ development of the land around the site & possible extension of the café area depending on the future of the project.
The centre is open every day from 9am to 6pm between Easter and mid-October and 10am to 5pm, Wednesdays and Sundays throughout the winter.
Group bookings for parties and functions or to hire the facility are welcome.

The Ruah is a cosy self catering cottage for two in a private cliff top location on the south-east of Eday. The renovated croft is part of Green Farm which has its own sandy beach and a recently discovered Neolithic site that is excavated every August.
The Ruah is available all year and is ideal for walking, bird watching, cloud spotting, star gazing, rock pooling, daydreaming - or just relaxing. There’s a walled yard to the front of the cottage with a picnic bench and uninterrupted views of the sea and neighbouring islands. If you’re lucky, you might see grey seal pups come ashore in the autumn, and even the Northern Lights in winter.
The old farm buildings to the west of the cottage include the remains of an original Orcadian sailed windmill and a wooden threshing machine.
The Ruah has excellent modern facilities including a wood burning stove, multi fuel cooker, microwave and fridge. There’s a TV in the lounge area and a CD player (with USB docking) in the double bedroom. The shower room has a power shower and a washer/dryer.
Rental charges for The Ruah are £250 a week or £60 a night (for a minimum two nights), but sorry - no smoking or pets
